All undergraduates at the University of Miami must complete three cognates to graduate. A cognate is a set of at least three related courses. Students take one cognate in each of the three areas of knowledge: People & Society; Arts & Humanities; and Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics. Students must also complete two additional cognates of their own choosing: one in each of the two areas of knowledge outside their major. Anthropology courses count towards the completion of thematic cognates in the following areas of knowledge:
